When you deal with reality, you're much more likely to get the results you desire. When you ignore reality, it's struggle.
I'm exploring the realities of triathlon swimming to help you achieve better performances in the water.
Reality #2. Performance in the water is a result of skill more than it is the result of fitness.
Most swimmers are aware that they are not particularly skilled swimmers, so they do what has always worked for them on land- they train hard. They know that they aren't as skilled, so they train hard with the intent of making up for inferior skills with superior fitness.
Can you relate?
Unfortunately, performance in the water doesn’t work like performance on land. On land, more fitness can almost always ‘fix’ poor running and cycling performances from the start. The more you train, the better you get.
Based upon this experience, triathletes take the strategies on land and put them to work in the water.
Sadly, this doesn't work, as the experience of most triathletes demonstrates.
Fitness cannot ‘fix’ poor swimming performances until you are already a really skilled swimmer. The reality is that performance on land is driven primarily by fitness whereas performance in the water is driven by skill. As a result, more fitness in the water cannot make up for a lack of skill.
Because most triathletes are inexperienced in the water and have emphasized fitness training on land, they don’t have much experience learning new skills in the water. As a result, figuring out what to do and how to do it can be confusing.
To make matters worse, there is a LOT of information out there about technique.
As we humans tend to complicate everything, many triathletes will either develop an overly complicated approach to developing their skills, or they’ll get overwhelmed and not bother trying to address their skills.
What should you do?
Accept reality!
If performance is the result of skill, how should you structure your time in the water?
If performance is the result of skill, what activities are going to be the most productive use of your time?
If swimming skill seems really complicated, how can you simplify it?
Wrap you head around reality. Answer these questions and start acting on it.
I'll have more for you in the future.
FASTER. EASIER. BETTER.
