Q&A- If you had to pick three key skills to focus on, what would they be?

If you had to pick three key skills to focus on, what would they be?

Here’s what really matters, a simple explanation for why it’s important, and a great exercise to get started with.

1. Position

You want to be like a rocket ship in the water- as straight as can be.

You want to be in perfect alignment on the surface of the water, from head to toe.

Just like a plane, a car, or a boat, you’ll be slowed down by resistance.

Keeping everything in line reduces resistance.

It’s a critical skill that’s also hard to learn.

Here’s a simple way to do it, that anyone can use.

2. Pull

Your pull is your engine.

It creates the propulsion that moves you forward.

They key is move a lot of water backward.

To do so, you want to create a big paddle with your whole arm, then move water backwards for as long as possible.

This exercise makes it simple to learn do just that.

3. Piston

Rotation is key because it allows you to recover the arms more effectively without disrupting alignment, and it allows you to get more out of your pull.

That’s a big win!

This exercise simplifies the process of learning to time your rotation by eliminating the over-water arm recoveries, all while retaining the essential rhythm of the stroke.

Because the arms are moving forward underwater against resistance, you have to time the rotation and the recovery effectively.

It forces you to lock in the timing.

While improving your swimming isn’t easy, it IS simple.

Focus on the key skills and you will improve.

Hope that helps!
