No breaststroke pullout

Lane 3, 3rd from the top; last wall at 1:50 minute mark

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBOuqH0sKXk

For swimmers with weak pullouts, especially as they tire, it can be faster to simply get up and go without a pullout

Dolphin kicking through the breakout

Caeleb Dressel in center of frame; ~1:49 in the video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoA-FCqlC8A

You’ll see that he continues to dolphin kick through his first stroke. The second to last kick happens as he begins his first pull, and his last kick happens when he finishes that same stroke.

Rollover dolphin kick

Watch at 2:05 minute mark to see the skill. It can be useful for those that extend their underwaters are much better dolphin kickers on their back than stomach. Please note that this is footage from an IM race where this skill is ILLEGAL. It is LEGAL in freestyle races.

Delayed backstroke

In the first video, watch the Nike sign on Peirsol’s hip. It drops down when he enters, doesn’t move throughout the entirety of his pull, and then snaps up at the end. The rotation is delayed throughout the pull. You can see the same dynamic with Phelps (below) and Lochte (above). The Nike sign just makes it very clear. The 2nd link is Emily Seebohm from a different angle. Very little rotation during the pull, then a quick, dramatic shift to the other side.

Roll-over open turn

The key here is that the feet are pointing DOWN once they hit the wall so swimmer can get a better push without losing speed on the turn. This works for both breaststroke pullouts and dolphin kicking in butterfly.

Breaststroke timing

This might not be ‘new’, but it is something many swimmers struggle with. Breaststroke timing is actually pretty simple when viewed this way. The legs stay in streamline during the pull, the arms and legs recover quickly, the arms go into streamline, then you kick. There is total separation of the arms and legs when they are pulling and kicking, respectively. Watching in slow motion can help.
